Rewarding Recklessness: Governor Walker's Message to Wisconsin Residents
MADISON, Wis. - In one of his first efforts at governing, Governor Scott Walker has sided with big corporations, insurance companies and special interest groups, turning his back on the individuals and families of Wisconsin. His proposed legislation clearly demonstrates that the Governor favors corporate profits over the average citizen.
"The Governor's proposals won't send a message that Wisconsin is 'open for business.' Rather, the proposals send a message that it is 'open season' on the people of our state," said Mike End, President of the Wisconsin Association for Justice. "Let's face it, every company looking to cut corners in order to make a bigger buck can come to Wisconsin without worry that they will be held accountable for seriously injuring or killing you or a member of your family," continued End.
In Governor Walker's "Corporate Profits Before People" legislation, the consequences for Wisconsin families are chilling. Irresponsible companies that manufacture products that kill and maim people will be "let off the hook" for their negligence. Insurance companies that refuse to pay fair claims in a timely manner will be rewarded for their unfairness. Hard-working employees throughout the state, who might be injured in the workplace by defective products, will find their access to the courts blocked. It is hardly a "shake-up" of our court system; rather, it is a "shake-down" of the people in Wisconsin.
"The people of Wisconsin want accountability; they want it in government and they want it in business. If these proposals become reality, then big businesses will set the rules, and when they do, the benefits go to big business, not the people," said End.
The Wisconsin Association for Justice stands with consumers to promote a fair and effective justice system for every citizen, not just the privileged and wealthy.
