Al Foeckler, WAJ President and  
Partner of Cannon & Dunphy, S.C.

 

Al Foeckler, a partner at Cannon & Dunphy, S.C., carved out a name for himself throughout the courtrooms of Wisconsin through a detail-oriented approach to personal injury law that has resulted in countless successful settlements and verdicts.  Al is a member of several legal organizations throughout Wisconsin including the Wisconsin Association for Justice and International Society of Barristers.

Mr. Foeckler graduated from Marquette University Law School, where he was a member of Alpha Sigma Nu Honor Society and part of the Marquette Law Review. Over the years fighting for the rights of injured victims, he has earned numerous notable awards, including being named to the list of Super Lawyers every year since 2012. Mr. Foeckler also earned the 2017 Robert L. Habush Trial Lawyer of the Year award from the Wisconsin Association for Justice after successfully representing victims who were killed and injured after a 13.5-ton panel fell from the O’Donnell Park garage façade.

In addition to his legal duties, Al has served his community through the years, including as a member of the City of Oak Creek’s Common Council for nearly a decade where he served as Common Council President as well as the Interim Mayor of Oak Creek from December 2011 through April 2012.  He currently serves as a Trustee of the Wisconsin Civil Justice Education Foundation and as a board member of WAJ’s Justice Fund.  He currently lives with his wife Sherry and five children in Wales and enjoys golfing with his family and watching his children play sports.

Synopsis:   Stay up-to-date with this quick-hitting session which will survey the most important supreme court and appellate court decisions from this past year on a wide range of topics that may impact your practice. 

Edward E. Robinson is a shareholder and litigator with Cannon & Dunphy, S.C., where his practice focuses on personal injury litigation, trucking and automobile crashes, products liability, and medical malpractice. He graduated (magna cum laude) from Marquette University in 1991, with a double major in English and History. Unable to find gainful employment reading poetry and historical biographies all day in coffee shops, he decided to attend law school.  Ed received his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1995, where he was a member of the Law Review, and a Malt & Barley editor (yes, there was such a position). Since graduating from law school, Ed has been an active member of WAJ, serving as the organization’s President in 2019, and as a contributing editor for The Verdict. Through his work on the Amicus Curiae Brief Committee, he has authored or co-authored more than 25 briefs on behalf of WAJ submitted to the Wisconsin Court of Appeals and Wisconsin Supreme Court.  He has been a frequent speaker at WAJ seminars, and since 2008, he has presented the annual Torts Update at the WAJ Summer Seminar.  Since 2011, he has been selected annually for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America®, and has been recognized annually as a Wisconsin Super Lawyer™ every year since 2009. Since 2014, he has also been a member of the Wisconsin chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA).  Ed is a longtime resident of Oconomowoc, WI, where he resides with his wife Lee Ann (who he is proud to point out is a public school teacher), and his buddy Rollie, who even in his old age, is always happy to greet Ed when he comes home from work.

Best Practices for Being an Exert Witness

Dr. Alaa Abd-Elsayed serves as  the Medical Director, UW Health Pain Services, Medical Director, UW Pain Clinic, Division Chief, Chronic Pain Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology and Associate professor of Anesthesiology.

Synopsis: This session will discuss the basics of evaluating work related injuries, controversies in diagnosis and how to pick up the right expert witness

 

Dr. Abd-Elsayed serves as  the Medical Director, UW Health Pain Services, Medical Director, UW Pain Clinic, Division Chief, Chronic Pain Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology and Associate professor of Anesthesiology. He served on the Medical examining board as a member and as a secretary. He published more than 250 peer reviewed manuscripts, more than 200 book chapters, edited 30 books and presented hundreds of presentations on the national and international level. He also serves on the editorial board of several prestigious medical journals. 

Dr. Abd-Elsayed has excellent experience working as expert witness and interacts with law firms all over the country.

Marketing Ethics and Other Considerations for Lawyers On-line

Timothy J. Pierce
 Ethics Counsel, State Bar of Wisconsin

 

Timothy J. Pierce has been Ethics Counsel for the State Bar of Wisconsin since 2004.  He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and his law degree, cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin Law School.  Mr. Pierce was previously a Deputy Director at the Office of Lawyer Regulation in Milwaukee and Madison.  He has also been employed as the Ethics Administrator for Milbank, Hadley, Tweed & McCloy, in New York, and as an Assistant State Public Defender in Racine.  He is a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin.  He is a frequent speaker on matters of professional ethics and has given hundreds of CLE presentations to a wide variety of groups on professional responsibility law.  He serves as reporter for the State Bar’s Committee on Professional Ethics and writes the monthly “Ethical Dilemmas” column for the State Bar of Wisconsin.  He has also taught Professional Responsibilities at the University of Wisconsin Law School since 2011 and currently serves as a Volunteer Subject Matter Expert for the MPRE.

Special Verdict Considerations with Negligent and Intentional Conduct: Dare to Compare?

   Eric Knobloch​, Gruber Law Offices, Milwaukee, WI

Eric M. Knobloch concentrates 100% of his practice to personal injury law, with an emphasis on injuries sustained as a result of negligent truck drivers and trucking companies. He graduated from Illinois State University in 2002, and graduated from Marquette University Law School in 2007.

Attorney Knobloch has devoted his entire legal career to representing injured plaintiffs throughout the State of Wisconsin and Illinois. Throughout his 15 year of practice he has taken over 30 personal injury cases to verdict in both State and Federal Court. He has taken many cases to verdict, both to a jury and the bench, which has resulted in outstanding recoveries for his clients. He has tried over 30 personal injury trials to jury.

Attorney Knobloch primarily handles catastrophic and serious injury cases involving wrongful death, traumatic brain injuries or other life-changing, permanent injuries. His focus involves trucking, automobile, motorcycle accidents; wrongful death, premises liabilities; and other general negligence matters. He is a member of the Wisconsin Bar Association; Illinois Bar Association; Milwaukee Bar Association; Wisconsin Association for Justice; and is licensed to practice law in Wisconsin and Illinois.

Eric concentrates a significant portion of his practice on catastrophic injuries sustained in semi-truck crashes. As of his Certification in January 2022, Attorney Eric Knobloch is the only Wisconsin based attorney Certified in Trucking Law by the National Board of Trial Advocacy.  Attorney Knobloch is an active member of The Academy of Truck Accident Attorneys. He is proud that he helps make a significant difference in the lives of his clients and our communities. Attorney Knobloch has been involved in a recent 8 figure settlement against a trucking company, as well as numerous 7 figure verdicts and settlements against trucking companies.

In addition to working at Gruber Law Offices, Attorney Knobloch is active in the legal community and frequently lectures and writes for the Wisconsin Association for Justice, a statewide association dedicated to helping injured individuals. He currently serves as a member of the WAJ Board of Directors and is proud to have been a member of the organization for his entire legal career. He also volunteers with the Milwaukee Bar Association with its community outreach programs.  Attorney Knobloch resides in Whitefish Bay, WI with his wife and three children, and is a proud member of the Iron Pigs Coaching Staff in the Whitefish Bay Little League Pee Wee division.

The Attack on the Presumption that Medical Bills are Reasonable

Synopsis:  During this session we will review the statutory presumption that medical bills are reasonable in value, and the growing defense practice of attempting to rebut that presumption.  We will discuss the applicable law, how the defense is attacking the presumption, and tools for combating this.

 

Corey Lorenz is a shareholder in the Madison office of Habush Habush & Rottier S.C.®. Her primary practice areas are personal injury and nursing home negligence. Throughout her career, Corey has litigated matters in both state and federal court, ranging from individual injury claims to complex product liability matters against large corporations. In this capacity, Corey has worked to represent plaintiffs throughout Wisconsin and across the country. She is involved in numerous organizations and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Wisconsin Association for Justice.

Attorney John A. Becker graduated from UW-Law School in 1982 and practices in Racine, Wisconsin.  For forty years he has represented persons injured in personal injury and worker’s compensation accidents.  He has tried cases throughout southeastern Wisconsin and has argued numerous cases in the Wisconsin Supreme Court and Court of Appeals.  He has also taught classes at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Carthage College.

Recently Attorney Becker has written “Recreational and Governmental Immunity in Wisconsin” (2022), and he has updated the Boyle Safe-Place book, “Wisconsin Safe-Place Law – Third Edition” (2022).

Judge Hetzel is a graduate of West Bend East High School. He obtained his bachelor's degree in Political Science from UW-Stevens Point. In 1997, he received his Law Degree from Marquette University Law School. After a few years in private practice, he opened Hetzel Law Office, LLC in West Bend, and worked there until taking the bench as Circuit Court Judge, Branch I, in June of 2022.

Lodging Cancellation Policy:

  • A $15.00 service charge will be deducted from the deposit before refund for cancellations made at least 14 days prior to arrival: any cancellation within 14 days before arrival will result in forfeiture of the deposit.
  • A 50% deposit or 1 night's stay, whichever is greater, is required to guarantee the reservation by the Group's guests. 
LANDMARK NON-SMOKING POLICY:
All lodging suites are non-smoking. A $250.00 penalty will be charged to any guest in violation of the non-smoking policy.
 
CHECK IN AND CHECK OUT:
